Great Stuff is an insulating spray foam, great for sealing up cracks and other airgaps. (See data sheet: http://hpd.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/household/brands?tbl=brands&id=4004008 )
Hardware stores sell single-use cans with crappy plastic applicators. They suck: they break really easily, they are only go for a single use, and they offer very little control.
The Great Stuff applicator guns, on the other hand, are much much better. Having used a gun, I'm never going back to the single-use cans.
We're insulating the attic rooms in our house, and using Great Stuff for a few areas. But after the single-use applicator failed on the third can in a row, I gave up on them.
A friend lent me his Pro gun (it looks something like this: http://toolmonger.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/greatstuffpro-450.jpg ) and some cans that work with it, and a can of cleaner.
It was great. It handles somewhat like a caulk gun. A knob on the back controls how fast the spray comes out, and I was able to control the stream so that I could fill in a big 2-inch-wide gap and then move on to a quarter inch gap with barely a pause. I could also stick the nozzle into places where the plastic versions couldn't reach.
A applicator gun is about $50 (which is ridiculous), and you do need to make sure that the foam doesn't dry inside the nozzle of the gun, but otherwise, it's pretty easy to use.
