Absolutely, a safe ladder of the right size for the job (and for the user, we need ladders weighted for large people) is a must. I've got half 8' and half 10' (2.4m and 3m, if I did the arithmetic right) ceilings in my house, so we have to have a couple of step ladders.
My mom had a fishing tackle box for her hardware too. I've got a couple of plastic sectioned cases, but none are as good as that box was.
